Teaching Your Dog Some Manners – Part 10

In the previous nine blogs we have discussed different obedience commands and the proper way to teach and use them. The one thing we have not talked about is consistency. The only way you can teach your dog anything is to be consistent. Consistent not only in the words you use, but also in the way you apply them.

You can’t expect your dog to get down from the couch. If you’ve used the word down to get him to lie down beside you or on a dog bed. If you use the word Off to get him to get off the couch, or his feet off the counter, it wouldn’t make sense to use that word to leave something alone. The command “leave it” or “Drop it” is better used here.

If you have several family members taking part in the training of the dog, have a family conference and come to an agreement as to which words will be used where. A well trained dog is a happy dog in a happy family.
