Pets are happiest when they’re home, surrounded by familiar sights, smells and sounds.

For many years, pet owners faced a dilemma when they had to be away from home. Limited care options were available.  One choice was boarding at a kennel or vet.  Another was turning to family, friends, neighbors or a professional boarder.  But these solutions were seldom ideal.

Pet Sitting has become a viable option for your pets care. Today, pet sitters and professional pet caregivers – look after an animal or animals, at home, while their owner is away. Pet sitting has taken the anxiety out of leaving a pet behind, which is why it is one of the nation’s fastest growing industries.

Pet sitting offers the best of all worlds – for pets and their owners. Trauma is minimized.  Owners need not go through the ordeal of transporting unhappy pets and worrying that they might be exposed to other animals’ illnesses.  Animals get to stay in their familiar environment, sleep in their own bed, and maintain their diet and exercise routine and are attended to by caring people.

Professional pet sitting allows owners to confidently leave their pets home, knowing that they’ll receive the love and care they so rightly deserve.

Boarding Kennels are not for everyone. For those who decide to use a commercial kennel when they are away should use precaution. Do you homework to determine that the facility where you are taking your dog is safe for him. Make sure all of his shots are up to date. Kennel cough and other deceases are common in places like this. You don’t want to take in a healthy dog and get back a sick one.

No matter what steps are taken to make dogs feel at home, the kennel environment is so different from that of a pet’s own home. They are in a strange place, with strange people, and don’t have their dog crate or pet bed, a place they call their own. It is natural for them to undergo some stress during their stay. Reducing stress for dogs in kennels has obvious advantages for the dogs themselves, and their owners will feel more at ease if they know that the kennel owner cares about the dogs they look after.

Allow plenty of time to deliver your dog to the kennels so you are not in a last minute panic and pushed for time. Otherwise, your stress will be communicated to your dog and it is better if he leaves you when you are relaxed and happy

Dogs don’t get to choose their own lifestyle. They don’t get to choose their owners or masters either. What they do get to do is be loyal loving pets. If properly trained they will be loving companions in whatever lifestyle is dictated to them, whether it be a City dog who lives in an apartment and sleeps on a doggie bed, or a farm dog who runs loose all the time and sleeps in the barn.

Dogs are not lazy, unless we train them to be. They love action and having a regular job with a regular routine gives them something to look forward to each day. Have you seen a herding dog smile after the roundup and all the cattle are in the pen. Have you seen how proud and happy a service dog is, knowing he is helping someone in need. The joy a therapy dog brings to a senior citizen in a nursing home is beyond words.

These are a few examples of jobs a dog can have and feel good about their ability to be productive.  Before you get a dog, determine what kind of lifestyle you’re going to give him. Select the type or breed of dog that fits best into this lifestyle.

Why Choose Orthopedic Dog Beds?

After a long day of work or play, climbing into bed is the perfect remedy for your aching limbs. Restorative sleep is essential for recuperation for all animals, not just humans. But what does your dog have to climb in to at the end of a long day? Orthopedic dog beds will provide your best friend with the same relief your mattress gives you.

Pumping your dog full of painkillers to alleviate their aches and pains certainly isn’t the preferred M.O. Orthopedic dog beds are specifically designed to provide relief for older dogs, arthritic dogs, and dogs with joint pain without the use of medication. They’re also recommended for younger dogs with hip dysplasia, as it will put less strain on their joints over time.

Rested Dogs are Happy Dogs

Like people, some dogs cannot be comfortable on a stack of worn down pillows or a hard, cold floor with sheets. Canines require the a reasonable amount of sleep and rest like humans, so purchasing a dog bed for your furry little friend would be a great idea; after all, you wouldn’t want to sleep on a cold floor yourself, would you?

There are many luxury dog beds to choose from, each of which caters to different canine needs. A heated dog bed, for example, is ideal for dogs with short coats. To some, it may seem a bit far-fetched to buy a dog a luxury bed, but why wouldn’t you do that for your best friend?

When you have visitors to your home, is your dog the life of the party? Does he run to the door barking? Does he jump on everybody to greet them? Does he nudge them to be petted, making a general pest of himself?

Maybe your dog doesn’t do any of these things. Maybe he just lies in a corner on his dog bed, knowing they didn’t come to see him. If this is your dog, congratulations! You have a well trained dog.

For the rest of you dog lovers out there, you need to ask yourself a question. Is my dogs’ behavior offensive to my guests? If the answer is yes, a few suggestions are in order. If you don’t want him in the same room, put him in a restricted area behind a pet gate. Putting your dog in a wire dog crate beside your chair, is a good way to restrain you dog and still have him be a part of the party.

In the previous nine blogs we have discussed different obedience commands and the proper way to teach and use them. The one thing we have not talked about is consistency. The only way you can teach your dog anything is to be consistent. Consistent not only in the words you use, but also in the way you apply them.

You can’t expect your dog to get down from the couch. If you’ve used the word down to get him to lie down beside you or on a dog bed. If you use the word Off to get him to get off the couch, or his feet off the counter, it wouldn’t make sense to use that word to leave something alone. The command “leave it” or “Drop it” is better used here.

If you have several family members taking part in the training of the dog, have a family conference and come to an agreement as to which words will be used where. A well trained dog is a happy dog in a happy family.

Off Command – This command is often times confused with the down command. The down command is use when you want your dog to lie down next to you, in a corner or on a dog bed. The off command is used when you want your dog to get off of something. Get off the couch. Get your paws off the counter. When you dog jumps up on you (uninvited) say off and knee him in the chest.

Leave it Command – This is the dog training command you’ll use when you want your dog to stop doing whatever he’s doing, whether it’s pawing through the garbage or starting to eat some strange food. Put your dog’s favorite toy a few feet away from him. When he start to get it, pick it up and give your “leave it” command. More than likely, he’ll look at you in surprise. When he does, praise him, then give him the toy. Keep doing it until he drops the toy on command.

Each training session should not last more than 15 min

The “Down” command is a standard command used in competitive obedience. It is also a command that should be a main component of any pet owners training program. When company comes over, you don’t want you dog pestering them for attention. The best way to deal with this is to tell your dog to down, and he can lie down beside you. Or, you can place a Dog Bed in a corner of the room and tell you dog to go lay down.

Down. Your dog needs to know your dog training command for “sit” before he learns “down.” When your dog is in the “sit” position, again hold a treat in front of his face and make sure it has his full attention. Give the “down” command, while at the same time moving your hand with the treat down to the ground, then away from him along the ground. As he follows the treat with his eyes, he will most likely lie down. When he does this, praise him and reward him with a treat. If he fails to lie down, place your hand on his back and gently push down until he goes down.

Each training session should not last more than 15 min.
